bigTree: ‘lost & fumed’ Mixtape

This is one mixtape I’ve been playing repeatedly. ‘lost & fumed’, the latest release by bigTreeJM (bigNatty and bigMoody) is near-perfect, in my opinion. Featuring the contributions of Knixx Taylor (“Giant”), Mila.Akilah (“Double Tap”) and Spacekat (“Let Yuh Go”), production was done by SOS Dynamikz and bigTreeJM.

bigTree has the ability to weave the patois sound into hip hop/rap frames that are appropriate, clear and authentic. Guest artistes are also given a lot of room to explore their creativity, and the chemistry is never rushed. If one expects to hear some reggae or dancehall, this is present in “Contraband Freestyle”; however, the rest of the songs are a Jamaican rapper’s haven. Have a listen today!

Kxng Izem: ‘Midnight Til Dawn’ Double EP

Kxng Izem is set to make waves with his new double EP, ‘Midnight Til Dawn’. Each EP carries 6 songs, carrying various musical instrumentations and styles. Production is credited to Ten24 Music and KaleX, with additional production by Island Wav, Sweet Rush Music, Shakespeare Productions and Delagroove Productions. Recording was done at the well-renowned Harry J Studios. Cover art was done by Alexsandra.

‘Midnight’ is a solo project, while ‘Til Dawn’ entails features with Mila.Akilah (“Dawn”) and KaleX (“Faawud”). The energy of both EPs is palpable; Kxng Izem is adamant about seeing social ills corrected while helping every individual to access the best life possible, but also has room for light banter, flirting and conversation to put you at ease. The project strives to contrast darkness and light, observing the various phases of life – just as the sun and moon make their own cycles.

ZihKing: ‘ReBirth’ EP

Released on June 17, 2022, producer and beatmaker ZihKing presents a collective body of work titled ‘ReBirth’. The EP features a number of locally renowned talents such as MISAN & Rado Medz (“ReBirth”), Khemist & StillVillN (“ReFocus”), Gana General & Mila.Akilah (“ReLove”), Jah Vezl & Nyrobi (“ReVitalize”) and King Shaladon & SpaceKat (“ReTune”).

‘ReBirth’ is an example of where Jamaican music can go when there is more collaboration and business taking place. In a time when becoming a star can easily lose its shine, the value that one brings to the public is what garners their growth and support. By breaking the mold of typical sounds and pairing the strengths of vocalists who have their respective audiences, ZihKing has possibly produced a future vintage collector’s item.
